Ashley McLean Emenegger curates I-Dentity at the University of Missouri

I-Dentity
University Gallery, University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO
Curated by Ashley McLean Emenegger
February through March 2008

I-Dentity brings together a multi-generational and international spectrum of emerging and established video artists that contend with the notion of identity and self-determination. Their unique expressions portray and transcend individual and collective notions of self as they elaborate on personal and universal struggles, stereotypes, and biases and confront the status quo of politics, gender, -isms, and isolation, particularly within the ever expanding world scene of globalization. They are creating their own personal mythologies.
In the medium of video, the artist, subject, and/or narrator are interactive forces, speaking and moving in a suspended or simulated portrayal of time. The essence of the theme, both choreographed and transcendent, is animated and literally talking us through a collection of carefully sculpted moments. There is a distinctive intimacy that is created with the medium creating an expansive sensory experience in the exchange. This poignancy is why I have chosen video to portray the theme of identity.
I-Dentity artists include:
- SE Barnet (Los Angeles & London)
- Nancy Buchanan (Los Angeles)
- Zackary Drucker (Los Angeles)
- Nabawia (Nabby) El-Soudani (Los Angeles)
- Anthony Goicolea (New York)
